A touch of the Mediterranean
Koper is an ancient coastal city with a touch of the Mediterranean. It may be somewhat in the shadow of Portoroz and Piran, but it has developed immensely in the last 10 to 20 years and the countryside is a veritable treasure trove of natural and cultural heritage. There are many things to do in Koper, from sightseeing and exploring to hiking, cycling or even climbing.
Starting point for climbers
Many sports climbers go to Misja pec, a rock wall near another attraction, Osp cave. Little further from the coast, there is a Podpec village with and old defensive tower and a good observation point over the whole area.
Sightseeing
Koper is not shy of natural phenomena. The Ears of Istria stone arch is one of the most important in Slovenia as is Debeli Rtic one of the best conserved. Sacred almost as is Saint cave in Socerb. The cave is called Holly because it is the unique underground church in Slovenia.
Some of the most interesting remains of forts and defensive towers are in Socerb, Crni Kal, Kubed and Podpec.
It is interesting to see a traditional local house as well, Bardinc house is a good testament of local architecture. Of course, there are bigger architectural monuments as well, like Praetorian palace or Taverna.
Easily accessible
Ideally, one stays in Koper longer but even if one day is all you have it's well worth it. With a good car rental in Ljubljana and excellent highway system, Koper is almost around the corner and you will not lose much time on the road.
